Ok, So I’ve finally got back to this plugin. I know its been a while, and I’ve got a lot of requests for support for multiple sidebars on one page. Version 1.1 now handles that for you! There is a catch though, after this upgrade, you will need to go and re-associate your pages with your sidebars, as the settings will not carry over. So please, back up your database, and take note of what pages/posts use what sidebar.

Hi,
I went and updated the pugin and re-associated my sidebars and… it’s just not working any longer. It worked fine before. Any ideas I can try? Any way I can go back to the previous version?

I am looking at the link you sent, it does not look like the the plugin has been upgraded. Make sure the new version is installed and activated. Do you see the ‘replacement’ option when editing a page or post?
If this continues, here is a link to the previous version, http://getson.info/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/sidebar-generator.zip.
Let me know if this is still a problem, and I can look into it further.
Hey, thanks for replying! I actually already went and sneakily found an old version of the plugin and re-installed that. The new one definitely was not working for me.
I guess I will stick with the old one for now…is there any reason I need to upgrade?
Thanks so much!
The new version allows for sidebar ‘replacement’, meaning if your theme has more than one sidebar (like a sidebar on the right, and in the footer) you can select which sidebar you want to replace on a per-page basis. If you only have 1 sidebar on your pages, there is no need to upgrade. I’ve gotten a few reponses from poeple who do have it working, but I’ll test a few things out and see if theres any upgrade issues.
Hi, I appreciate what you’re trying to do but this plugin has basically “undone” all my sidebar specific hacks (many of which I painstakingly went back and did after I installed the plugin the first time). Specifically the way I was configuring it with the custom fields does not work at all anymore. Very annoying. How can I go back to the previous version?
Im sorry this has caused a problem. You can revert back the previous version here http://getson.info/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/sidebar-generator.zip. I will put a note on the plugin to let others know that this new version is only really needed for those who use a theme with multiple sidebars.
The previous version of the plugin worked fine for me. I updated to the newest one (1.1) and it doesn’t work anymore (I use wordpress 2.9.1 german). The sidebars are still there (widgets section), but I just can’t get them to display on any page – although I assigned them new to different pages. Just the standard sidebar shows. Logically the following should work:
“Replace WP Default Sidebar with Home” (Home is my “other” sidebar I’d like to display)
But it doesn’t. I even selected all five pulldowns – also not working. Am I doing something wrong with the assigning of the sidebar?!?
I also tried “Replace Sidebar with Home” – as the WP Default Sidebar is called “Sidebar”. Still not working.
By the way, the custom field “sbg_selected_sidebar” (which was automatically created by the previous version of the plugin) disappeared after editing and saving the page. And no new field was added. ?!?
Of course I can switch back to the previous plugins version, but maybe you have a solution?!? As it is working with your website I don’t understand why it doesnt’t work with mine. By the way, I’m using the “Freshy 2″ theme (http://www.jide.fr/). Maybe that’s the problem?!?
Thanx for your help!
I am sorry this has caused some additional effort. It sounds like you are using it correctly. I am not sure why it is not working. It works on my 3 test sites, and this site (getson.info). I also have quite a few other poeple using it without issue. If you don’t need support for multiple sidebars, you will see no benefit in upgrading.
hope that helps.
For the mentioned website I switched back to the previous version and now it is working again.
But I have a different website with multiple sidebars and it really would be cool if it would work. But it’s just not working. How did you get it to work with your websites? I tried it now with two different themes and two different wordpress versions (2.8.6 and 3.9.1 – both german). It’s not working.
I appreciate you taking people’s desires into account but after i auto-upgraded everything was broken, which you warned me of, so i went to a specific page to fix it but i just get that bizarre replace thing. This doesnt make any sense.
Each page only has 1 sidebar yet on a page it says “Select the sidebar you wish to display on this page, and which sidebar it will replace. (leave unselected to use the default sidebar everywhere)”. This only makes sense if there was 1 selection here and if there was some kind of Submit button to make something happen. What i have is 5 sidebars choices and 5 replace choices on a single page. I cant figure out what you mean by this set up. No matter what i do it does nothing.
Replace ABOUT with ABOUT
Replace MY CURSE wit MY CURSE
etc…
making selections does nothing.
I dont get it.
I am reverting back to the old plugin until this is explained or fixed.
Thank you!
Its purpose is to replace your existing sidebars with new generated ones. So if you have an ‘about’ sidebar, and you want to generate a new one, in place of it, you would select ‘about’ as the one you will be replacing, and your new generated sidebar as what you’d want to replace it with. In the next release, I will try to come up with a clear-er method of explaining this. Any suggestions are welcome.
The method you had before was great.
What sidebar would you like to use: [Choose from the available sidebars]
Done.
I installed the sidebar generator on the temporary url I am migrating my site to, and have a custom thesis theme. I can’t find the dynamic_sidebar() file anywhere, so the plug in doesn’t activate. What can I do to make it work?
the plugin should ‘activate’ regardless of your theme. Usually the ‘dynamic_sidebar()’ code is in a sidebar.php file. Not all themes use sidebars, if this is the case, you’ll have to add that, or switch themes to use this plugin.
Hi, this looks like just what I want — except that I can’t get it to work. I have installed the sidebar generator (version 1.1.0). I can generate sidebar names… I can add content to them…. then I edit a page, and in the “Sidebars” option I request that it replace “Sidebar 1″ (Using the Thesis theme), with a generated sidebar. I save everything, refresh the browser, and…. nothing changes.
What am I missing?
Thanks,
jan Smith
